Project
Integrated Control System for a Clean Energy Facility
A clean energy facility in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia required a reliable, scalable control system to support a complex HCHG process with distributed field I/O and continuous operational demands. With high I/O density and multiple remote drops, the system needed to deliver consistent performance, clear operator visibility, and long-term serviceability.
Turn-Key Controls delivered a fully integrated automation solution, taking responsibility for system design, control panel fabrication, PLC programming, and HMI development. The system was engineered to support stable operation across a distributed architecture while remaining maintainable and adaptable as the process evolves.
Technical Highlights
PLC Platform: Siemens S7-300
I/O Architecture: Distributed remote I/O with six field drops
Approximate I/O Count: 500 points
Operator Interface: WinCC Flexible HMI
Application: Clean energy HCHG process control
Project Outcomes
Challenges Solved Through Disciplined Control Design
In distributed energy systems, control architecture decisions directly affect reliability, diagnostics, and long-term operational risk. Turn-Key Controls delivered a solution that addressed both immediate production needs and future system demands.
Scalable Distributed Architecture
Structured remote I/O design supported high I/O density while maintaining predictable performance across the facility.
Clear Operator Visibility
WinCC Flexible HMI provided intuitive process visualization, alarms, and diagnostics to support timely operator response.
Serviceable System Design
Panel layouts, PLC logic, and I/O organization were developed to simplify troubleshooting and reduce downtime during maintenance.
End-to-End Accountability
With system design, panel fabrication, and programming handled by one team, integration risk was minimized and commissioning proceeded smoothly.
Why It Matters
Built for Reliable Operation in Distributed Energy Systems
Clean energy facilities demand control systems that operate continuously, adapt to change, and remain understandable long after startup. This project reflects Turn-Key Controls’ approach to delivering automation systems that engineers can modify confidently, maintenance teams can support effectively, and operators can trust in real operating conditions.
